Time to write

In the greater scheme of things, I'm really a nobody.

But around this little town, every Monday people actually read what I have to say when the weekly newspaper gets delivered in their mailbox.  And when I meet people who recognize who I am and the compliments fly, I admit I am blushingly flattered.  Seriously.  I blush.  It's terrible.

Of all of the questions they ask me, the most common is, "when do you find time to write?"  I can clearly see why this would be such a burning question, because most likely when they see me I've got a diaper bag slung over one shoulder and at least one kid slung over the other.

And when I am asked this question, I never really have a good answer besides "in my PJ's" because when i really think about it, the only time I ever get to sit and write is either really early in the morning or really late at night.  I'm either hunched over my desk, squinting through not-yet-caffeinated eyes, or sitting on the couch or in bed, laptop suffieciently heating up my legs as I type away.

(Same goes for designing the magazine too, in case anyone was wondering...)

So tell me, does this happen to anyone else?  Can anyone else find a direct relationship to their  sleepwear and their inspirational thoughts?  And can anyone reassure me that someday my children will all be in school at the same time and I'll actually be able to spend some quality writing time during the day?  (And then can someone tell me how not to miss my kids so much when they're all at school at the same time?)

Questions, questions.

When the baby is sleeping, I am writing, and the other kids are in school, I stop what I am writing - usually it's about the kids - whenever I hear a siren. When the school person answers the phone and doesn't say "We're in lockdown!", I ask a dumb question like "When is open house?", and, knowing everything - including my kids - are alright, I get back to writing. Until the siren wakes the baby up. Long story short...there is no way. We just keep doing what we do =) And you do it beautifully...
